New compact SUV from Merc 18 | 04 | 2013

MERCEDES-BENZ IS SET to go head-to-head with the Range Rover Evoque when it launches the production version of its Concept GLA early next year. It's understood prices will start around £25,000 (see more official photos of the new Mercedes Concept GLA).

Due to be unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show tomorrow, the Concept GLA, is the fourth vehicle based on the same platform shared by the A-Class, B-Class and CLA.

At 4383mm long, 1978mm wide and 1579mm high, the dimensions are understood to be almost identical to those of the production car. Though no details of the GLA's wheelbase have been revealed, it's believe they will mirror the same 2699mm as the other three cars based on the same platform.

While some of the exterior details — including the laser beam projectors in the headlights — are unlikely to appear in the production version, the bulk of the main styling of the five-door is expected to be carried over unchanged.

And while the Concept GLA is powered by a 208bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol, sending power to all four wheels through a seven-speed, dual-clutch, automatic transmission, the production model will also include a range of diesel engines. These will likely mirror those found in the current CLA, meaning a 134bhp 1.8CDI in the GLA200 diesel, and a 168bhp 2.1CDI in the GLA220.

"The Concept GLA marks a new approach for us in the compact SUV segment," Dr Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president for sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said. "This is a sporty and more coupĂ©-like evolution of this category of vehicle.

"The Concept GLA is a compact SUV that combines its sporting spirit with the all-round qualities of a tough, leisure-time companion. 'Escape the everyday', is the message this car conveys to its driver.

"It also makes clear the further potential of our compact vehicle architecture, which provides the basis for the A- and B-Class models that led the German market in their respective segments in the first quarter of 2013."
