First official look at VW ID.4 design 27 | 08 | 2020

THE BUILD-UP TO the launch of the new Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover next month has continued with the reveal of new official sketches which show the exterior design of the car. As you would expect, the focus is on aerodynamic efficiency. (Related: VW ID.4 unwrapped in China)

The second model to be built on VW Group’s MEB electric platform, following the recently launched ID.3 hatchback, the compact SUV recently went into production at the firm's Zwickau factory in Germany. (Related: VW reveals 341-mile range ID.3)

First seen as the ID Crozz concept, the design of the ID.4 is based on the ID.3. VW Group design chief Klaus Zyciora describes the look as  "clean, flowing and powerful”, adding that the mix of gentle surfaces with clear edges was intended to make it to look "as if shaped by the wind itself". Ok: we’ll give him his ‘artistic interpretation’ moment.

Clearly, the ID.4’s ability to cut cleanly through the air and maximise its aerodynamic efficiency was one of the main focal points of its design. No surprise then that it will have a drag coefficient of 0.28, making it substantially more efficient than most SUVs. (Related: VW unveils portable EV charging station)

“The electric design evolution of the ID 4 also means that we have focused very strongly on the aerodynamics,” Zyciora continued.

That focus has meant the rear of the car has been "significantly drawn in" to maximise the aerodynamic efficiency. There’s also a large, sporty roof spoiler , plusthe bodies of the rear light clusters have been designed to help ensure the airflow at the rear of the car is cleanly separated. Initially the ID.4 will be offered with rear-wheel drive and a range of up to 311 miles. An all-wheel drive version will follow. It’s also understood that the ID.4 will offer rapid-charging capability which will allow its battery to be charged to an 80% state of charge within 30min on a 125-150kW system.
