Peter Vardy boost for hospice  21 | 02 | 2014

SCOTLAND'S YOUNGEST AND most pioneering dealership groups, Glasgow-based Peter Vardy, has confirmed its Edinburgh operation is to team-up with St Columba's Hospice as its charity partner.

As a result, Peter Vardy Edinburgh will throw all its charity fundraising expertise behind the final push to raise the funds needed to finish the £26 million rebuilding of St Columba’s Hospice in Boswall Road, overlooking the Firth of Forth.

St Columba’s Hospice has been caring for patients in Edinburgh and the Lothians with cancer and other terminal illnesses since 1977. The Day Services, In-Patient Unit and our Community Nursing Team are vital resources, providing specialist care to over 1000 people and their families each year.

St Columba’s is a charity, not part of the NHS. It costs over £7 million each year to provide these services to local people. All services are given completely free of charge to all those who need care and support.

Its latest plans (illustrated in artist's impression, above) will see St Columba's Hospice create a state-of-the-art, specialist palliative care facility with a bright, spacious and modern 30-bed In-Patient Unit. There will be dedicated accommodation for Day Services and Outpatient clinics to suit the needs of a changing care service.

There will also be a new spiritual space – the Columba Room – which looks over beautiful new gardens and across the road the Education Centre provides specialist palliative care education locally and across the UK.

"This partnership with Peter Vardy is a really important step on our fundraising journey," Lesley Christie, director of Fundraising at St Columba's Hospice, said.

"The company has supported many charities since it was founded and we are delighted that they are giving us their valuable backing."

And the new commitment was welcomed by Guy Watson, managing partner of Peter Vardy Edinburgh.

"St Columba's is an institution in Edinburgh," Watson explained. "It has brought comfort to innumerable people over the last several decades and we are very happy to have it as our charity partner. It can depend on strong support from our staff, suppliers and customers."
