Hyundai unveils new i10 10 | 09 | 2013

HYUNDAI HAS PLEDGED to dramatically extend its model range, with 22 new models or updates to be launched by between now and 2017.

The first in the new wave of models is the Hyundai i10, and most of the updates are expected to be replacements. However, the Korean company does intend to move into new sectors, with the likelihood of a new compact SUV high on its priority list.

Currently Hyundai has 3.3 million cars on European roads, and around 75% of them are less than seven years old.

The new i10, which will be built in Turkey and enters UK markets in January, is 80mm longer, 65mm wider and 50mm lower than the model it replaces. Hyundai claims the car has best-in-class legroom and bootspace.

Hyundai has yet to release prices for the model in the UK, but given it's growth in size and better spec, prices are expected to increase.

"It will cost more money but the dealers understand that we can't bring out a new model based purely on value," Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai’s UK CEO, told Headline Auto.

"Four years ago sales in the A-segment were based purely on value. The cars that have come out since have added style to the segment, but at a higher price. The challenge for us will be to breach those two extremes.

"A lot of people still see us as a Korean company, but Hyundai is actually very Europe-centric these days.

"When the new i10 arrives, 90% of the cars we sell in Europe will be made in Europe. The Koreans recognise that Europe is an iconic market and to be recognised as a truly global company you have to be successful in Europe."
