Toyota recalls 75,000 cars in UK 14 | 11 | 2012

TOYOTA HAS RECALLED 75,000 cars — Avensis, Corolla and Prius — in the UK because of a potential steering wheel and water pump system problem.

The steering problem, which affects Avensis and Corolla models made between July 2001 and March 2009, could result in a loss of steering over time.

Toyota also explained the water pump problem could mean hybrid  components don't receive cooling. It affects Prius models made between July 2003 to April 2009.

There have been nine reported cases of this issue in Europe and no reports of any associated accidents.

The UK recall is part of a 2.7 million vehicle recall globally and follows on from another recall in the UK in October which affected 138,000 vehicles.

Despite manufacturer recalls being a common occurrence, Toyota has suffered under a media spotlight for its recall in 2009 which affected 12 million cars across the world.

Toyota GB will contact the owners of all affected vehicles within the next six weeks, asking them to make an appointment to bring their car to their nearest Toyota dealer. It is possible that some Prius will require attention for both issues.

According to model, the dealer will replace the hybrid system water pump and/or inspect the steering shaft. If the steering shaft does not meet Toyota inspection criteria, it will be repaired.

The water pump replacement should take no more than an hour-and-a-half. If required, the steering shaft repair should be completed in an hour. This work will be carried out free of charge.
