Vauxhall's super-quick diesel Astra 01 | 08 | 2012

VAUXHALL IS TO SLOT its most powerful 192bhp production-diesel into its Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer estate.

Already powering the Insignia and Astra GTC, the BiTurbo two-litre twin-turbo diesel will cover the 0-60mph sprint in "under 8.0secs", according to Vauxhall insiders. It's also tipped to have a max of 135mph.

But it's also impressively frugal and clean — especially given its pace — returning 55.4mpg and 134g/km respectively.

The new BiTurbo models are also impressively equipped, with 18in alloys, twin exhaust tailpipes, a body styling pack and alloy pedals all fitted as standard.

Prices start at £24,095 for the hatch and rise to £25,110 for the Sports Tourer. Order books are open now, with first deliveries scheduled for the end of the year.
