Renault 4 reborn as electric 4x4 04 | 10 | 2022

THE ICONIC RENAULT 4 will hit the streets again in 2025: but this time it will be reinvented as a retro-inspired electric 4x4. Renault has released these official teaser images ahead of the car’s reveal at the Paris Motor Show on October 17. (Related: Renault 5 reborn as electric supermini)

So, what exactly will we see in Paris? Well interpreting the images points to the new Renault 4 being a high-riding off-roader inspired by the 4L Trophy, a Dakar-style rally across the Moroccan desert. It’s no coincidence that the rally is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. (Related: Renault Zoe Riviera Limited Edition)

The images also illustrate that the new model will wear a familiar front fascia to the original R4, albeit modernised with LED lighting. And while the teaser images do show the R4 with a roof box and large wheel travel, it’s unlikely these will feature on the production car: they’re really an artistic and design nod to the 4L Trophy. That said, a Renault 4 with a roof box would be pretty cool.

It’s also important to realise and accept that the 2025 Renault 4 will only be ‘likened’ to the Sixties classic car in name and styling. It won’t replicate it. Best view it similarly to the new Renault 5 — due in 2024, which we’ve already seen as a £18,000-£21,000 concept — in that it will not be sold as a budget-friendly car, as was the Sixties version. Again similar to the R5, the new R4 will sit on the Renault-Nissan CMF-BEV small car platform — an electric version of the platform used on the Clio and Captur — which means it will be able to take advantage of new battery and motor technology which is currently in development. As for range? Expect around 248-miles on a full charge.
