Scots new car sales drop 04 | 06 | 2015

NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS in Scotland fell lays month compared to May 2014. While 16,357 new cars were registered this year, the numbers shows a drop of 1443 — a decrease of 8.11% — compared to the same month last year.

“Obviously we are disappointed once again to see a reduction," Douglas Robertson, chief executive of the Scottish Motor Trade Association, said, "but I think we need to bear in mind that May 2014 was the best May we had ever had, so it’s not the case that the 2015 figures reflect a poor month.

"However, we did predict a levelling of demand over the year as a whole and as we are now on a par with last year’s cumulative figure for the year, this would appear to confirm our predictions.”

The Scottish figures are in contrast to those of the UK as a whole which experienced an increase of 2.41% with 198,706 units registered against 194,032 for May last year.

Vauxhall continues to to be the biggest seller in Scotland with sales so far this year of 12,514, ahead of Ford, Volkswagen, Audi and BMW.

The biggest-selling model in May was the Vauxhall Corsa (pictured) with 865 sales, ahead of the Ford Fiesta (637), Ford Focus (488), Vauxhall Mokka (486) and VW Polo (469).

It's the same top three which lead the sales chart for the opening five months of 2015, with the Corsa selling 5577 units, ahead of the Fiesta (4779) and Focus (2628). The Polo is the fourth bestseller with 2535, ahead of the Mokka (2224).
