Audi previews E-Tron Quattro EV 19 | 08 | 2015

AUDI HAS GIVEN us a first hint at how its new all-electric crossover will look after releasing images of what it's named E-Tron Quattro concept.

Set to be unveiled at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, the E-Tron Quattro concept previews the brand’s first mass-produced all-electric vehicle, which is predicted to have a range of more than 310 miles. It's set to enter production in 2018.

Designed from the ground up as an electric car, the E-Tron Quattro follows Audi’s “Aerosthetics” concept, combining “technical measures for reducing aerodynamic drag with creative design solutions.” It also profits from the expertise gained in the development of the forthcoming R8 e-tron.

Movable aerodynamic elements at the front, on the sides and at the rear improve the air flow around the car. The aerodynamically-optimised underbody is completely closed. With a cd value of 0.25, the car — which sits between the Q5 and Q7 in terms of size — sets a new record in the SUV segment. This contributes considerably to the long range of more than 310 miles (500 kilometres).

Audi says the study is based on the second-generation modular longitudinal platform, and with its size — it combines a typical SUV body with a flat, coupe-like cabin which offers room for four people — don't be surprised if it's badged the Q6.

The Ingolstadt designers have positioned the large lithium-ion battery between the axles and below the passenger compartment: Audi says this installation position provides for a low centre of gravity and a balanced axle load distribution. That translates into better driving dynamics and driving safety than other vehicles in the segment, always according to the automaker.

The drive system consists of three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear axle, giving it what Audi calls an “electrified Quattro” all-wheel drive system.
