Nissan's new LED rear-view 10 | 03 | 2014

NISSAN HAS DEVELOPED a pioneering new rear-view system which will allows drivers to switch between a conventional rear-view mirror and an LCD screen.

Set to be used for the first time in its ZEOD RC racer, which will race in the Le Mans 24-Hours in June, the hi-tech system will then slowly appear in mainstream Nissan models. Its roll-out begins in Japan in the next few months.

The Smart rear-view Mirror integrates an LCD screen into its structure and links directly with a high-resolution camera mounted at the back of the car.

By simply pressing a button, the driver can then switch between a conventional rear view ‘reflection’ and the screen showing a view unobstructed by the C-pillars, rear-seat passengers or luggage.

Utilising state-of-the-art image-processing technology, Nissan says the system delivers a better rear view with a clear image possible in a variety of weather conditions, including rain and snow.

Additionally, the technology also provides a glare-free image in sunrise or sunset conditions, or when being followed by a vehicle with main beam headlights.

Nissan bosses believe the Smart rear-view Mirror — which the Japanese car maker sees as an alternative to a very wide rear window — will allow its designers to create "new and exciting designs".
