BMW reveals new X6 06 | 06 | 2014

BMW HAS REVEALED the first official images of its second-generation X6. The upmarket coupĂ©-like SUV will make its public debut at the Moscow Motor Show in August, before entering Scottish showrooms in December with prices starting at £51,150.

Due to be built at BMW’s US factory in South Carolina, the latest X6 has been comprehensively re-engineered in a joint development programme with the recently introduced third-gen X5.

Retaining a similar silhouette to its predecessor, the new X6 boasts even bolder detailing at the front and rear, plus the car's body is more structured in its appearance.

It's also slightly larger than the outgoing model: at 4909mm long, 1989mm wide and 1702mm tall, it's 34mm longer, 4mm wider and 12mm higher than the outgoing model. And while the wheelbase has been reduced by 2mm, to 1933mm, the new X6 is also 10kg lighter than the old model at 2065kg: well, at lest that's the case for the new X6's lighter model, the xDrive30d, despite higher equipment levels.

And inside the cabin it's clear BMW designers have raised the stakes, with a a restyled dashboard, more heavily contoured seats and luxurious trims. Stowage space has also been improved, but only by 10 litres to 580 litres. The new model also gets a new 40/20/40 rear seat-split configuration.

One petrol and two diesels will be available at launch, and all are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive four-wheel drive system. Dynamic Performance Control, which adds an electronically controlled torque vectoring function for added traction, can be added across the range as an option.

The range-topper will be the stonking 443bhp, turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol xDrive50i, which will be capable of hitting 62mph from standstill in 4.8secs.

The diesels include the 254bhp, turbocharged 3.0-litre, straight-six which has been slotted into the xDrive30d. While it hits 62mph in 6.7s, it'll also return 47.1mpg and emit 159g/km of CO2.

    The X6 M50d receives the same 376bhp tri-turbocharged 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel as its predecessor, and hits 62mph in 5.2s.
