Vauxhall to 'green light' Extreme 26 | 02 | 2014

VAUXHALL IS POISED to put its Astra VXR Extreme into full production if it gets a positive response at next week's Geneva Motor Show (see more official images of the Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme).

If, as expected, it gets the green light it will become the most powerful front-wheel-drive car in Vauxhall's history.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, the Astra VXR Extreme pumps out "more than 296bhp". It's mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

The standard VXR, by comparison, delivers 276bhp, which propels the car from standstill to 62mph in 5.9sec and a on to a top speed of 155mph.

According to Vauxhall, the concept is 100kg lighter than the standard Astra VXR. That's been achieved by using aluminium in place of steel and carbonfibre, which is used for the roof, bonnet, rear wing, diffuser, front spoiler, suspension cross brace, rear wheelhouse vents and the wheels themselves.

Naturally, Vauxhall hasn't yet given any indication of pricing structure for the new car, but it's fair to expect it to carry a healthy premium over the £27,260 of the standard Astra VXR.
