RENAULT IS PLANNING a busy 2014, with the scheduled arrival of its new rear-engined 'Twingo-type' city car, and a successor to the Espace, which is expected to be a luxury SUV.

While we've already seen images of the new Twin-Z, we'll have to wait until September's Frankfurt Motor Show before we see a concept of the new flagship mode. It's expected to be badged Initiale Paris.

Renault has admitted that not only does it not see the MPV format as premium, but acknowledges the Espace's combination of large windows and thin pillars is a design which is no longer popular with potential customers.

Instead, Renault has hinted the current growth in demand for luxury-type SUV models could provide the avenue for its flagship replacement.

The city car, meanwhile, has already been hinted at strongly in the shape of the Twin-Z. The concept, currently being developed with partner Mercedes-Benz alongside the new-generation Smart family, is believed to give a strong indication of how the car's exterior will look.

The new city car will mirror Smart's engine philosophy by having the powerplant at the back of the car driving the rear wheels.

Interestingly, while the Twin-Z is believed to be an electric version of the new city car, the next to be unveiled — at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix on May 23-26 will be a sportier concept, inspired by the Renault 8 Gordini.
