VW Golf Estate debuts 05 | 03 | 2013

VOLKSWAGEN'S NEW GOLF ESTATE made its first public appearance today at the Geneva Motor Show, 20 years after the first Golf Estate made its debut (see more official photos of the new VW Golf Estate).

Built, like the Golf hatchback — which has just been named European Car of the Year — on the VW Group's adaptable MQB platform, the estate is up to 105kg lighter than its predecessor.
The new model — which goes on sale in the UK in July, with first deliveries expected in October — has a more cavernous bootspace, up 100 litres from the previous model's 505 to 605 litres (loaded up to the backseat backrest).

The volume increases dramatically to 1620 litres when it's loaded up to the front seat backrests and under the roof: the MkVI estate could manage only 1495 litres.

For the first time, the all-new Golf Estate will also be available as a full BlueMotion model, with combined fuel consumption of just 85.6mpg (equivalent to 87g/km of CO2).

The BlueMotion estate uses a 1.6-litre diesel engine, like the Golf BlueMotion hatchback, producing 110PS. It's mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

    There's a comprehensive range of powerplants, including 1.2-litre TSI 105PS, 1.4TSI 122PS and 1.4TSI ACT 140PS petrols. In addition to the BlueMotion, there's also two other common rail diesel-engines: a 1.6TDI 105PS and a 2.0TDI 150PS.

And while the new Golf Estate range includes an all-wheel drive 4MOTION version, the model is unlikely to be sold in the UK.

Prices and full UK spec details will be revealed closer to the on-sale date.
