MAZDA HAS REVEALED the new Fastback version of the latest-generation Mazda3. The new saloon version joins the previously unveiled hatchback, and Mazda claims the new model will be capable of 72.4mpg.

Four engine choices — three petrol and one diesel — will be available from launch. Mazda's SkyActiv range of technologies is available across the range.

In addition to the all-new entry-level 99bhp 1.5-litre petrol, capable of 56.4mpg and with CO2 emissions of 118g/km, there's also a more powerful 2.0-litre in two output guises,118bhp and 162bhp.

While the larger unit returns 48.7mpg and 135g/km of CO2, the 118bhp delivers 55.3mpg, and 119g/km.

Not surprisingly, it's the 148bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel which returns the best overall figures: 72.4mpg and 104g/km of CO2.

Both saloon and hatch come with a six-speed manual as standard, though a auto 'box will be available as an option.

And while both bodystyles are wider and lower than the current model, the hatchback is the real eye-catcher thanks to its restyled roof, rear window, rear wings and boot lid.

The new fastback saloon though is larger than the hatch: at 4580mm compared to 4460mm, it's 120mm longer which contributes significantly to the extra 69 litres of stowage in the bootspace. Not surprisingly, it shares the same 2700mm wheelbase as the hatch.

And while the saloon retains the same folding rear seat arrangement as the hatch, it does benefit from a wider boot opening.

Full spec details and pricing of the new Mazda3 saloon and hatchback will be released in September, ahead of its scheduled on-sale date in Scotland at the end of the year.
