THE NEW PEUGEOT 208 GTi, which goes on sale across the UK in March, will cost from £18,895: that makes it £2000 more expensive than the rival £16,995 Ford Fiesta ST.

But the 208 GTi, which Peugeot say is the genuine successor to the 205 GTi, will be priced alongside the Seat Ibiza Cupra.

Powered by a 200bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, the 208 GTi has 20bhp more than the Ford. However, at 203lb/ft, it delivers 11lb/ft less than the Fiesta produces on overboost.

On paper, the new Peugeot hothatch — which enters production in April — is capable of hitting 62mph from standstill in 6.8 seconds. It also emits 139g/km of CO2. 

LED lighting, parking sensors, 17in alloys and a digital radio are all standard equipment.
