Hyundai unveils 84g/km i20 07 | 03 | 2012

HYUNDAI HAS SET a new benchmark for CO2 emissions from a car with a conventional powertrain. The ultra-frugal facelifted Hyundai i20 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Powered by its 74bhp, 1.1-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine and equipped with the Korean firm’s Blue Drive tech, the i20 emits 84g/km. The car will arraive in Scottish showrooms later this year.

That figure makes it cleaner than the Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi EcoDynamics which emits just 85g/km.

Just for good measure, Hyundai will also introduce another frugal diesel into the i20 range: the 89bhp, 1.4-litre unit, which emits 96g/km.

On sale since 2009, the facelifted i20 now gets Hyundai’s latest fluidic sculpture design language, including the company’s signature hexagonal grille and new headlamp units.

The front and rear bumpers get a more contemporary profile, while there's also a new sculpted bonnet and new wheel designs.

The facelifted version, which comes with Hyundai’s five-year Triple Care service package, is also longer than its predecessor — it's now 3995mm long, an increase of just 55mm. The width (1710mm), height (1490mm) and wheelbase (2525mm) remain the same.

New Hyundai i30 to start at £14,495
