Peugeot displays 208GTi 07 | 03 | 2012

ONE OF MOTORING'S most fun-filled cars, the Peugeot GTi, is set to make its return. The French manufacturer unveiled a new concept version of a 208 GTI at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new 208 is launched this year and Peugeot believes the concept gives an indication of the range's sportiest derivative.

The GTi Concept is powered by Peugeot's powerfully-compact RCZ THP 197bhp 1.6-litre turbo engine, combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. The car will go head-to-head with established rivals, including the Ford Fiesta ST, Citroën DS3 and Renaultsport Clio.

As you would expect, the GTi concept looks the part. It sits on 18in wheels and five-spoke alloys, plus it has a 36mm wider track at the front and rear compared to the standard 208. There's also a rear roof spoiler that provides some aerodynamic benefit.

Externally there's also double-chromed exhaust tailpipes, lower bodywork spoilers and lower sill skirt extensions. Peugeot has also given the concept uprated brakes, with 302mm diameter discs at the front, 249mm at the rear and red-painted brake calipers.

And for fans of the classic Peugeot 205 GTi, the new 208 GTi Concept has its logo situated in the rear quarter panel, as well as on the front grille.
