Audi plans hardcore TT 03 | 12 | 2012

AUDI IS POISED to build a new lightweight, high-performance version of its next-generation TT.

The new car, which is awaiting the go-ahead from company bosses, is planned to sit at the top of the coupĂ©’s range as an 'extreme GT3' version.

The new model, which won't enter showrooms for another three years after it gets the green light, is based on the new, transverse-engined MQB platform.

Expect it to have a kerbweight of around 1000kg, while still housing a five-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive and a roll cage.

In addition to using a new type of injection-moulded carbonfibre for components, weight will be saved through the use of lightweight steel and aluminium.

No details have been released yet about the TT GT3's powerplant, but it's expected to use the 335bhp, 2.5-litre turbocharged unit which will power the next-generation TT RS (pictured).

The new range-topping TT is also likely to be joined by a new V8 diesel hybrid hypercar which will be positioned above the R8.

Potentially badged 'R10', the diesel hybrid will essentially be a road-going version of Audi’s Le Mans-winning R18 e-tron quattro.

In race guise, the car uses electricity generated from a flywheel system to power an electric motor in each front wheel to improve performance when exiting corners at speeds above 75mph.
