First look at next generation Volvo XC90 23 | 11 | 2011

THIS IS OUR FIRST glimpse of the next generation Volvo XC90 SUV. The official design sketches — there are four in the range, all slightly different — show glimpses of the new model which could be launched as early as 2014.

Featuring an ultra-low CO2 diesel-electric hybrid version as part its line-up, the images hint that the new model — which replaces the original launched in 2002 — will reflect the styling of Volvo's Concept You.

The concept boasts a front grille inspired by the Frankfurt concept and a lower, more sporty, squat stance.

The new XC90, Volvo has also confirmed, will be the the first production car to be built on the firm’s upcoming scalable platform architecture.

In simple terms, that means forthcoming models to be built on the same production line, irrespective of size. And in addition to the use of hybrid and electric powertrains, Volvo plans to introduce a new four-cylinder-only engine range.

Revealed for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid — which also features a six-speed auto 'box — is the model likely to lend its powertrain to the next XC90 for production..

Thanks to a 212bhp, 325lb ft 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel engine, which powers the front wheels, the model is a sub-50g/km diesel-electric plug-in hybrid that will have combined economy of 150mpg.

Volvo’s 69bhp ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) system aso powers the rear axle, meaning the car becomes a 4x4 when required.
