FORMER BRITISH GT CHAMPION Sandy Mitchell bids to close in on a second title this weekend when he tackles the penultimate two-hour race of the season at Brands Hatch. (Related: Mitchell cruelly denied Spa24H podium)

The 22-year-old from Forfar, partnered by team-mate Adam Balon in the No 72 (#72) Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo prepared by Barwell Motorsport, heads to the Kent circuit locked in a four-way battle for the British GT Championship.

“We always knew this season was going to be extremely tight and that’s exactly the way it’s worked out,” Mitchell, a Lamborghini factory driver and member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, stated.

“With just two two-hour races remaining in the season, and a total of 75 points available, there are four, even five cars in with a chance of taking the title.” (Related: Mitchell re-writes British GT record books at Spa)

At the end of the last round at Spa-Francorchamps, Mitchell and Balon were lying in third place in the battle for the championship, just half-a-point off second place. But the Belgium result remains provisional due to an appeal involving another car. (Related: Scot Sandy Mitchell wins 2020 British GT Championship)

After finishing in fourth place at Spa, having set a new qualifying lap record for a British GT car and then dropping back after serving a 15-second success penalty, Mitchell is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of his Lamborghini at Brands.

“We go there knowing we don’t have any success penalties to serve, while a number of the other cars in contention for the title do,” the Scot, personally backed by Black Bull Scotch Whisky, Upper Dysart Larder, Lamborghini Edinburgh and Tunnocks, explained. “That’s a big advantage for us.

“We’re racing on the full grand prix circuit which allows us to really stretch the Lambo’s legs to the full. The car’s quick at Brands and that, allied to the the whole team at Barwell being fired-up for the challenge over the final two races of the season, puts us in a strong position. “We’ve won already this season at Britain’s other iconic grand prix circuit, Silverstone, so we’re determined to win and claim maximum points at Brands Hatch this weekend.”
