Smart ForTwo Cabrio revealed 28 | 08 | 2015

SMART WILL OFFICIALLY lift the wraps from its all-new ForTwo Cabrio at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, ahead of entering Scottish dealerships next February.

The iconic two-seater, which will be available to order from mid-November — when prices will be revealed —features a novel new roof arrangement.

The new ‘tritop’ fabric roof can be pushed back as a more conventional sunroof, with the rear screen built into it still up. Alternatively, it can be fully folded onto the tailgate along with the rear screen, at which point the two roof rails can also be removed and stored in the boot to turn it into a full convertible.

The roof, which can be opened in 12-seconds — even when the car is travelling at top speed — is available in a choice of three different colours. Cleverly, Smart boffins have also ensured the roof can also be opened from outside the car using the key fob.

Based on the standard hard-top Smart Fortwo, the new cabrio shares the coupe's styling, though it does benefit from improved rigidity underneath the car to compensate for the lack of a fixed roof. The new model is 15% 15% stiffer than the previous ForTwo Cabrio.

As you wold expect, engines for the Cabrio mirror those food in the hard-top. That means you get a choice from two three-cylinder petrol units: a normally aspirated 70bhp 1.0-litre and an 89bhp turbocharged 0.9-litre. Owners have the choice of the standard five-speed manual, or a DCT dual-clutch automatic.
