BMW to build sporty X4 23 | 09 | 2011

BMW IS POISED to start building a new, sporting version of it's successful X3. Named, not surprisingly the X4, the newcomer will further strengthen BMW's position within the highly competitive premium SUV sector.

When it goes on sale across Scotland in 2014, the X4 will be smaller and more agile than the X3 (pictured). And while the X4 will obviously boast four-wheel drive technology, there are plans to introduce a range-topping X4 M version.

As you would expect, the X4 will share many of the X3's parts — including floorpan, drivelines and chassis — but it will enjoy its own individual styling. This will be aimed at giving it a more sporting image which would enable BMW to position it higher than the SUV upon which it is based; and, cynics might suggest, charge a premium in doing so.

It is also expected the X4 will be available with a choice of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines mated to a six-speed manual, seven-speed double-clutch or optional eight-speed automatic gearbox.

As with the X3, BMW does not plan a two-wheel-drive version.
