Honda set to tackle Boxster 11 | 11 | 2011

HONDA IS GEARING up to go head-to-head with the Porsche Boxster. Ok, it's not going to happen overnight, but Honda has given clear a clear indication of its intent be releasing official images of its new mid-engined sports car.

The concept, which will tale pride of place on the Japanese manufacturer's stand at next month's Tokyo Motor Show, will be joined — in complete contrast — by a stylish new plug-in hybrid saloon and a Renault Twizy-style urban commuter vehicle.

Honda is remaining seriously tight-lipped about the targa-roofed Small Sports EV Concept. In fact, all it will say officially is that it previews a “next-generation compact EV sports model that’s fun to drive while achieving excellent environmental performance”.

Aficionados of Honda have long dreamt of a successor to the NSX supercar. While this isn't quite it, it does indicate the manufacturer is ready to return to sporstcars.

In size appears to be closely linked to the Boxster, a car that Honda’s US dealers are known to want to be able to tackle. In reality, it should also probably be seen as a modern day interpretation of the NSX.

Meanwhile, the AC-X saloon concept — which appears to be between the Civic and Accord in size — has been described by Honda as a next-generation plug-in hybrid.

Last month Honda revealed it intends to have a plug-in hybrid on sale in limited numbers China, Japan and US in 2012.

The concept, according to Honda, “offers a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience in urban and long-distance motoring”.

It's offered with an ‘automatic driving mode’ for more relaxed driving, with an ‘engine drive mode’ on offer for more spirited driving.

Finally, the Micro Commuter Concept gets a similar three-seat 1+2 layout to the Nissan PIVO 3 — which we brought to you earlier this week — featuring a central driving position.

Cleverly, a novel feature is its ability to store Honda’s tiny new Motor Compo electric folding bike. This features a detachable battery pack that can be used to remotely power everyday items.
