Stunning Alfa 4C 'to cost £38k' at launch 19 | 12 | 2011

ALFA ROMEO'S STUNNING 4C sportscar is expected to be priced close to £38,000 when it goes on sale in 2013. Before that, a prototype model will make an appearance in the middle of 2012.

It's also understood that Fiat engineering bosses are targeting a 900kg kerb weight for the 230bhp direct injection, 1750cc turbocharged powerplant.

By the time the 4C — which is expected to hit 62mph in 4.5secs — is launched, the 1750’s block will have been switched from cast iron to aluminium, thus resulting in a significant weight reduction of 25kg.

After the initial development was carried out by Italian race-car specialist Dallara, the work has now been taken in-house by Alfa.

All future development work will be carried out a small specialist team headed by Fiat engineering chief Mauro Pierallini.

Alfa will build 18,000 4Cs over the lifetime of the car.
