Mitchell targets Silverstone points haulposted in OTHER09 | 05 | 2019

SCOTS ENDURANCE RACER Sandy Mitchell returns to action in the Blancpain GT Endurance Series this weekend. The Scot will fire up his 190mph Black Bull Whisky-backed Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 for the next round at Silverstone. (Related: Mitchell bags Blancpain points at Monza)

The 19-year-old Scot, who will again partner English duo James Pull and Jordan Witt in their Barwell Motorsport-prepared Lamborghini, is looking to build on the pace shown in the opening round last month in Italy.

Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme, returns to Silverstone, the home of British motorsport, confident of again delivering on-track. “I’ve raced at Silverstone before, so I know it pretty well,” he explained. “In last year’s Blancpain race at the circuit we were on course for a Silver Cup podium, and possibly the win, before the car suffered gearbox problems with just a few minutes remaining.

“We head to Northamptonshire knowing we have a fast car, and one which definitely suits the track. We tested there earlier this year and all three of us were fast, so the pointers are good.”

And Mitchell is determined to score more points in the Blancpain Silver Cup after leaving the opening round at Monza with his first championship points of the year.

“We certainly showed at Monza how quick the car is,” the Scot, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Whisky, continued. “We qualified an incredible fifth on the grid of 48 cars, which put us in the middle of a group of factory cars and drivers.

“I’m confident James, Jordan and I can again produce that level of pace in quali. Then we just need to make sure we all deliver in each of our stints in the three-hour race.” (Related: Mitchell confirms 2019 Blancpain GT3 bid)

And having come so close to a podium finish 12 months ago, Mitchell is fired-up to again fight at the front of the field in the the ultra-competitive Blancpain Silver Cup at Silverstone.

“I came so close to a terrific result in our home race 12 months ago. We head back knowing the car is fast, and the three drivers are capable of delivering podiums and winning races,” he said. “What better place to deliver our first podium of the season than on home soil at Silverstone this weekend.”

In addition to Black Bull Scotch Whisky, Mitchell is grateful to his growing network of loyal sponsors. These include Scots companies InverTay Homes, Thorntons, Close Brothers, Tunnocks, Stirfresh, Provisio Funding and Celurca Investments. In addition, Mitchell is supported by Christie Digital, Equinox Design and Flaunt — three companies which operate on the world stage — and Manchester-based Duerr’s.

“I would also like to thank and welcome on board my latest sponsor, Fraserburgh-based refrigerated trailer specialist Gray and Adams,” Mitchell added.
