Scots start third in title decidersposted in BTCC09 | 10 | 2010

SCOTS GORDON Shedden and Lewis Williamson will both start from third on the grid tomorrow as they bid to win the British Touring Car and British Formula Renault Championships at Brands Hatch.

Williamson, the 20-year-old from Golspie, starts the first race in the final FRenault Championship double-header — the route which took Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton to Formula One — behind his rival for the title Tom Blomqvist.

"It's not ideal, but at least I can keep an eye on Tom," Williamson, whose time of 43.674secs was 0.059s behind second-placed Blomqvist and 0.064s behind polesitter Nick Yelloly, said today.

"I know what I have to do this weekend, and that's to finish ahead of Tom in both races; so nothing's really changed after qualifying. I won both races last time out at Silverstone so I'm determined to do the double again tomorrow and clinch the title."

Shedden meanwhile also finds himself behind his two main rivals for the BTCC title. Current leader Jason Plato qualified his Chevrolet on pole at the Kent circuit, just 0.133s ahead of Shedden's Honda team-mate Matt Neal.

"Obviously I would have liked to have been ahead of Matt and Jason, but we just missed out," the 30-year-old from Dalgety Bay said after finishing 0.011s behind Neal.

"I'm just four points behind Matt in the championship and 21 behind Jason, so really I need to win at least one of tomorrow's three races and to have them have a bit of a problem.

"We all know there's history between the two of them, so it might wise just to sit back a bit and see what unfolds in front of me."
