Highlander tops timesheets at Estorilposted in MSPOR22 | 10 | 2010

SCOTLAND'S LATEST racing star, Highlander Lewis Williamson, continued his impressive 2010 season by topping the timesheets on the final day of GP3 testing at Estoril – despite having never driven the car before.

The 20-year-old Dundee-born racer, who now lives in Golspie and only lost out in the battle for this year's British Formula Renault Championship in the final race at Brands Hatch, was among 30 young drivers testing at the Portuguese circuit along with eight other past and present Renault racers.

Testing with Atech CRS GP, the youngster posted a best time of 1min 31.230s during the afternoon session of the third and final day of testing to claim the top honours. He was equally impressive in the morning session running second quickest and just 0.125ss behind the more experienced and GP3 race winner Adrien Tambay.

Williamson also recorded the quickest time on the previous day, despite it being his first ever time in the car and edging out Dutchman Nigel Melker with local race António Félix da Costa third.

“I’m still weighing up all my options for next season," Williams said, "but GP3 is certainly one of my preferred routes for next year. I still have a Formula 3 test to take shortly, which was part of the prize for doing well in the Formula Renault UK championship, so I will have to see how that goes; but GP3 is a natural step for Renault drivers who want to move up the motorsport ladder.”
