Mitchell to defend British GT title 21 | 12 | 2020

BRITISH GT CHAMPION, Scot Sandy Mitchell, will return to defend his title next season with Lamborghini. And the 20-year-old from Forfar will do so having been promoted to a full factory driver role with the Italian supercar company. (Related: Mitchell named Lamborghini factory driver)

Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, will again drive a Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 prepared by Barwell Motorsport. The Scot will partner Adam Balon in the ultra-competitive Pro-Am class.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to the British GT championship in 2021,” Mitchell, also a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, stated. (Related: Scot Sandy Mitchell wins British GT Championship)

“It’s a fantastic feeling to start the season as defending champion, and knowing I am a full Lamborghini factory driver. We will be fully focused on the new season ahead and I know we’ll hit the ground running at Round 1.

“It’ll be exciting racing alongside Adam, especially with the championship now being heavily weighted towards Pro-Am and Silver-Am pairings. I think it’ll make the championship very close. Everyone in the team works hugely hard, and I think we have an excellent chance of being right at the front again in 2021.” (Related: Mitchell bags Euro GT podium)

Mitchell, who lifted the British GT title last year with Rob Collard, and won at Brands Hatch before powering to victory in the season finale at Silverstone to clinch the championship, is looking forward to partnering Balon.

“I obviously know Adam from the season we’ve just finished, because he was in the other Barwell British GT car with Phil Keen,” the Scot continued. “We four drivers always got on really well at the track, so that was really nice. (Related: Mitchell wins again at Spa24H)

“He’s a guy who is really calm and gets on with the job, and is certainly a fast amateur driver. I’m excited to be with him. I think it’s a strong pairing.”

And Mitchell is looking forward to continuing his winning relationship with Barwell and Lamborghini.

“Next year will be my fourth season both with Barwell, and driving a Lamborghini,” he said. “It’s a team and a car I know really well, so every time I get in the Lamborghini I feel up to speed and ready to do a good job.

“You could see from last year how reliable the team’s two cars were, which is testament to the hard work all the crew in the Barwell garage do. Our pace at every round this season was competitive. I’m sure we’ll be able to keep that up for next season and do a good job. (Related: Mitchell storms to British GT win)

“It was awesome to be the first driver to win the British GT Championship in a Lamborghini Huracan. The aim now is to do that again. To return as a factory driver this season, in the Pro seat in the Pro-Am category, is step up for me personally, and one which I’m looking forward to.”
