All-new Mazda3 starts at £20,595 20 | 02 | 2019

THE ALL-NEW MAZDA3, which now features mild-hybrid technology, has gone on-sale at Scottish dealerships today, with prices starting at £20,595. First deliveries are scheduled to start in May. (Related: New Mazda3-based SUV teased)

Initially the range will consist of the five-door hatchback, in both petrol and diesel forms. This will be supplemented later in the year with the addition of the four-door saloon. Across the range, the new, innovative Skyactiv-X engines will also appear in both body styles.

Unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show last November, the new Mazda3 is the first of the Japanese carmaker’s next generation of vehicles and reflects the very latest in Mazda’s engineering, design and manufacturing. (Related: All-new Mazda3 revealed in LA)

At launch, buyers can choose from the 120bhp 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, or 115bhp Skyactiv-D diesel. Mazda has yet to release performance or fuel consumption figures for both powerplants. The range also consists of five trim levels: SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech.

The new Mazda3 also sets a new benchmark for the carmaker in terms of the high level of standard equipment available across the range. High-end technology such as a windscreen-projecting colour head-up display with Traffic Sign Recognition; radar cruise control, LED headlights, satnav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an advanced eight-speaker audio system are standard on all models. From SE-L Lux upwards, the new Mazda3 also gets a reversing camera, smart keyless entry and heated front seats; while Sport Lux adds chrome dealing in the “high-class cabin”, a frameless rear view mirror and rear privacy glass.

Buyers stepping up to the GT Sport see the introduction of black leather seats with power adjustment, a heated steering wheel, and Bose audio. The range-topping GT Sport Tech adds a suite of additional electronic safety equipment including a 360-degree camera, and Driver Attention Alert with interior camera.

With the exception of the flagship GT Sport Tech, which is matched exclusively with the 120bhp Skyactiv-G engine, all trims are offered with both diesel and petrol engines. Buyers can also choose between a six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.

The Skyactiv-G petrol engine now features a cylinder deactivation system and Mazda’s M Hybrid 24v system. This mild-hybrid system improves fuel economy by recycling recovered kinetic energy. A belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG) converts the energy in the 600kJ lithium-ion battery, while the DC-DC converter supplies it to the car’s electrical equipment. Inside the cabin, Mazda’s designers have taken a minimalist approach with every aspect of the cockpit laid out in horizontal symmetry. There’s also a noticeable increase and improvement in the quality of the materials used.

All models feature a seven-inch colour TFT driver instrument display, while the latest version of Mazda’s MZD-Connect infotainment system features a larger 8.8-inch central display, improved navigation and a revised multimedia commander control dial.

The Japanese carmaker says the all-new Mazda3’s exterior styling “adopts a more mature interpretation of the KODO design to deliver a sporty and emotional hatchback”.

There’s no denying the hatchback’s sporty looks are enhanced by the elimination of unnecessary character lines, meaning the styling now relies on beautifully curved body panels. Dark metallic colouring and bold contouring of the signature wing and grille distinguish it from the forthcoming saloon.

It’s worth highlighting the hatchback also boasts a low nose, slender headlights, reduced wheel arch gaps and a long wheelbase.

Offered exclusively on the hatchback, Mazda’s newest paint colour — Polymetal Grey — makes its debut on the Mazda3. SE-L and SE-Lux cars feature 16in silver wheels, while from Sport Lux onwards, 18in grey metallic alloys, rear privacy glass and piano black window garnish set the higher grade models apart.

The range starts at £20,595 for the entry-level Mazda3 120bhp SE-L petrol, and rises to £27,735 for the range-topping 115bhp GT Sport auto diesel. The most expensive petrol is the 120bhp GT Sport Tech auto at £26,795, with the entry-level diesel — the 115bhp SE-L — costing £22,395.
