SCOTS ENDURANCE RACER SANDY MITCHELL has confirmed he will make his American motorsport debut this weekend. Backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Whisky, the 19-year-old from Forfar will contest the full Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship. (Related: Mitchell confirms 2019 Blancpain GT3 bid)

The intense, high-speed six-round championship is fought out on a number of America’s iconic racetracks, including Road America and Laguna Seca. The season gets underway this weekend (April 5-7) at Barber Motorsports Park, before heading to Watkins Glen in June.

Mitchell will dovetail his US title assault with a full campaign in the Blancpain GT Endurance Series, Europe’s leading sportscar championship. In the US, he will form part of the Wayne Taylor Racing team’s four-car squad.

Mitchell, a race winner in both Blancpain and British GT championships, is part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to further my career, and I have to thank both Black Bull Whisky and Wayne Taylor Racing, plus Prestige Performance, for the opportunity,” Mitchell said.

“I felt it was important this year to increase my seat time in a competitive environment, and to be able to race in one of the highest-profile championships in America will significantly develop my experience.

“Wayne Taylor Racing has a winning record in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, having clinched seven North American Pro-Driver, team and dealer championship titles, as well as has been crowned the overall 2017 Lamborghini Champions at the World Finals in Imola, Italy.

“Their track record, along with that of Prestige Performance, is second to none in the championship, and I’m looking forward to mounting a serious challenge for the 2019 title.” (Related: Mitchell gets Lamborghini global role)

Mitchell’s US campaign was welcomed by Euan Shand, chairman of main sponsors Black Bull Whisky.

“We’ve sponsored Sandy since long before he could legally drive on the road in the UK,” Shand smiled. “Aged 15, we saw Sandy’s potential and we have backed his racing career since then.

“We think he has the potential to reach the ultimate prize, which is the Le Mans 24 Hours. The European and American platforms he will race in this year prepares him beautifully for that opportunity.”

Following the opening two races, the American championship moves to Road America (Aug 2-4), Virginia International Raceway (Aug 17-19), and Laguna Seca (Sept 7-9). The final race of the series will be held during The World Finals at the Circuito de Jerez in Cadiz, Spain, on October 26-27.
