    MAZDA HAS CONFIRMED prices for its new Mazda2 will start at £11,995 when it goes on sale at Scottish dealerships in the next few months.

    Set to go head-to-head with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, Toyota Yaris and the third-gen Skoda Fabia, the new Mazda also gets the Japanese manufacturer's innovative EU6-compliant SkyActiv technology.

    There will be a comprehensive choice for buyers, with 16 models in the line-up

    Buyers have a choice of a 16-strong model line-up, which are powered by Mazda's latest range of EU6-compliant SkyActiv engines. There are three 1.5-litre petrol units — delivering 74bhp, 89bhp and 113bhp form — with the most economical being the 89bhp version, which averages 62.8mpg at the pumps and emits just 105g/km of CO2.

    Not surprisingly, the most efficient in the range is the 103bhp 1.5-litre diesel, returning 83.1mpg, and with CO2 emissions of 89g/km.

    The base model weighs in at 1045kg, with the heaviest model, the diesel, clocking in at 1115kg.

    Built at the firm’s plant in Hofu, near Hiroshima, Mazda believes the new model's "winning combination" will be its mix of “performance, fuel economy, safety and driving fun”.

    Built to Mazda's SkyActiv technology principles of being lightweight and rigid, the new 2 gets a new chassis and body. The new Mazda2 is, essentially, a production version of the acclaimed Hazumi concept which made its first appearance in Geneva in March. Close scrutiny identifies only the headlights, wheels, wing mirrors and door handles have changes.

    The new Mazda2 is 4060mm long, 1695mm wide and1495mm. tall: close, overall, to the Hazumi concept, which was 4070mm long, 1730mm wide and 1450mm high.

    Buyers will get the choice of five trim levels, starting at the entry-level SE up to the range-topping Sport Nav. Prices climb to £17,395 for the SkyActiv 1.5 diesel Sport Nav.

    SE trim gets daytime running lights, engine stop-start technology and air conditioning. Step up to the mid-range SE-L and you get 15in alloys, integrated Bluetooth capability, electric rear windows and cruise control, with the option of Mazda's seven-inch colour touchscreen. The range-topping Sport and Sport Nav trims gain 16in alloys, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and climate control.

    Fitted as standard across the Mazda 2's model range are a variety of safety features, including dynamic stability and traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and hill-hold assist.
