EVs could save Scots £600k a day  05 | 09 | 2013

SCOTS DRIVERS COULD save more than £600,000 on their daily commute if they switched to electric cars. That's the finding by new research carried out by the Energy Saving Trust Scotland.

Commuters in Scotland spend £270 million a year commuting by car, the equivalent of £740,000 a day.

But the new research highlight that a change in driving and car ownership habits — including the adoption of electric vehicles — could carve 80% off that figure to just £137,000 a day. The annual saving would be around £220m.

“With the average Scottish car commute standing at 8.4 miles, there are considerable savings to be made if drivers looked at adopting electric vehicles rather than conventional petrol or diesel cars," Mike Thornton, director of Energy Saving Trust Scotland, said.

“In an electric vehicle, a number of round-trips of less than 17 miles could easily be completed on one charge.

"People plug their phone in to charge every night, and topping up an electric vehicle really is as simple as that.

“The Energy Saving Trust, funded by Transport Scotland, is helping to save people money at the pumps by encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, giving advice about financial incentives and by using Fuel Good sessions to teach motorists how to drive more efficiently.”

Energy Saving Trust Scotland is holding a number of FREE breakfast events in September and October to showcase the benefits of electric vehicles to organisations.

Attendees can hear about savings and practicalities from people who already own the vehicles, see a range of those on offer and chat to Energy Saving Trust advisors about financial incentives available.
