Zagato's "yellow peril'' Fiat 500 02 | 03 | 2011

ONE OF THE unexpected wee stars of the show was this novel take on a coupe version of the Fiat 500 produced by Italian coachbuilder and styling house Zagato.

The 500 Coupe Zagato sits on a regular 500 platform but sweeps its rear bodywork up towards the lowered roofline. And it certainly has some features which turned heads: check out the traditional Zagato design motif, the ‘double hump’ and 17in alloy wheels. Not surprisingly, Zagato says the new concept — which boasts a yellow leather interior to match the Pop Yellow paintwork, plus contrasting stitching on the steering wheel and sports seats — is designed “mainly for a young and dynamic male target”.

Powered by a new, more potent version of Fiat’s turbocharged, two-cylinder TwinAir motor — output is increased to 103bhp at 5500rpm and 114lb ft at 2500rpm — the coupe delivers CO2 emissions of just 95g/km.

Sadly there are no official plans to turn the model into a production car, though it is no secret that Fiat has been actively considering a more sporty 2+2 version of the 500. Given the fact the Zagato car was percehd solidly on the official Fiat stand, it wouldn't take a genius to work out there could well be something 'production-based' in the offing.
