Flying Scotsman Rally boost for fans 31 | 03 | 2011

SCOTS FANS of classic and vintage cars should head for Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate in Dumfries & Galloway this Sunday; competitors in this year's Flying Scotsman Rally will stop off to contest manoeuvrability tests in the grounds.

And in addition to the vintage cars taking part in the Flying Scotsman Rally — Britain’s longest and toughest Vintage challenge — a further 25 Aston Martins and Ferraris will also park up in the grounds of the castle, home of the Duke of Buccleuch.

Having completed the manoeuvrability tests, the cars will then head off to the Forests of Ae, Glengap, Laurieston and the 11-mile long Loch Ken before stopping for lunch at Gatehouse of Fleet, overlooking Wigtown Bay on Solway Firth.

Suitably refreshed, it's on to the 40-mile drive along single track roads through Glentool Forest and past Loch Doon before teams tackle the final test at the Kames Motorsport Centre. The rally finishes at the Dalmahoy Country Club Hotel, on the outskirts of Edinburgh later on Sunday.

The competitive three-day race of vintage motorcars will begin tomorrow at Brooklands, Surrey — home of the world's oldest motor-racing circuit — and finish up in Edinburgh. Rallying against the clock, and Britain’s most famous train, the classic ‘reliability’ time trial is exclusively reserved for vintage and pre-war cars in production before 1941.

“We are very excited to play host to an event where some of the most wonderful cars ever produced will be on display," Drumlanrig Castle events coordinator Sandra Collinge, explained. "We are very hopeful a good crowd will turn out to welcome them for this great day out offering something for all the family in the fantastic setting of Drumlanrig Castle."

The first cars are expected to arrive at Drumlanrig at around 10.30am and will depart by 12 noon; obviously members of the public are invited to attend. The Aston Martins and Ferraris will be on display until 2pm.
