Di Resta pays tribute to Franchittiposted in F119 | 11 | 2013

BATHGATE'S PAUL DI RESTA took time out after the US Grand Prix to pay tribute to his cousin, Dario Franchitti. The three-time Indy500 winner and four-time IndyCar champ has been forced to retire from racing on health grounds after his massive crash in Houston last month.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to my cousin, IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti," the 27-year-old Scot said before flying to Sao Paulo for this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

"Dario has always been like a big brother to me: we speak most days, no matter where either of us is in the world.

"He's always been a true inspiration for me, and though it was the right decision to make, I know how difficult it was for him to confirm he wouldn't be racing again.

"Dario's a legend in American motorsport, and I can't speak highly enough of him, and how he's contributed to my career.

"As a family we're there to support him, and I'll be shocked if he doesn't stay in the sport, as a consultant, or a mentor.

"One of the things that will keep Dario going is the fact he can come racing with the likes of me, and his younger brother, Marino. Being part of all that will drive him on.

"I know he also has a lot to offer to a racing team as an ambassador, and I'll be shocked if he doesn't stay in the sport. He will be a credit to somebody's team.

"Now though, my attention turns to the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, and I need to focus to ensure we finish the season on a real high."
