Williamson tops GP3 timesposted in MSPOR23 | 02 | 2013

GOLSPIE'S LEWIS WILLIAMSON finished the latest official GP3 Series test at Estoril, in Portugal, topping the timesheets.

The 23-year-old Scot, piloting his Bamboo Engineering car for the first time, went fastest in a time of 1min 27.675secs.

Williamson's impressive performance came despite a short spell of rain during the afternoon which looked set to leave Manor's Nick Cassidy as the pacesetter.

Undaunted by the tricky, slippery conditions, Williamson (pictured in action at Estoril), the 2010 McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year winner, went back out late in the day to eventually finish 0.088secs faster than MW Arden driver Daniil Kvyat's.

"That was a good day's work," Williamson, who is expected to be confirmed as one of Bamboo's two GP3 racers in the next few days, admitted today.

"It's been great to get back into action and I've got to thank everybody at Bamboo Engineering for giving me a car which was so fast in the conditions."

Williamson, backed by the Highland Arena private consortium, was controversially and mysteriously dropped by the Red Bull Junior Team from its driver development programme last year.

The talented young Scot contested a number of GP3 races for the Status GP team in the second-half of the season finishing fifth in Hungary.

Williamson is expected to join Bamboo for the next GP3 test at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain on March 12/13.
