SCOT LEWIS WILLIAMSON has confirmed he will contest the remaining two races in the GP3 championship with Status GP. The 22-year-old from Golspie, a winner in GP3 at Silverstone last season, will be part of the F1 support package at both Belgium and Italy.

“It’s great to get the chance to be back in a car for the last two rounds of the GP3 Series,” the Scot, who finished fifth last time out with the team in Hungary and will race at Spa this weekend, and Monza seven days later, said today.

“My opportunity with the team only came at the last minute for Germany and Hungary, but by the last race we were really building up and getting back into it.

"I’ve been working with the team through the break – they are a really good bunch of guys who are fun to be with.

“I’ve already been to Spa this year in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. It’s a circuit I really like, and I will be pushing to the maximum this weekend and take what comes from that.”

Williamson fifth in Hungary

Williamson, supported by the Highland Arena consortium of private backers, was controversially dropped by Red Bull's Junior team after just three rounds of the Formula Renault 3.5 season.

And the Scot has already 'won' at Spa this year when he took the chequered flag first in a bizarre race in wet conditions, but was subsequently disqualified.

Williamson's continued partnership with the Status GP team — where he will again join Filipino-Swiss Marlon Stockinger and English racer Alice Powell — is expected to further boost the team's performances.

“Lewis brought a lot to the team in Germany and Hungary," Status GP commercial director Tim Scott said.

Williamson denied Spa victory

"After getting to know each other and forming the relationships you need to do well, we came away from the second race in Hungary with a promising result.

“We’re all very keen to build on that over the last couple of rounds. We’ve got a good record of winning at Spa and Monza, and we’re looking to continue our strong form at those tracks with Marlon, Alice and Lewis.”

Free practice at Spa takes place tomorrow at 08h30, with qualifying on Saturday at 09h45. Race one is on Saturday at 17h20 and race two on Sunday at 09h25.
