Scot Williamson tops GP3 timesposted in MSPOR30 | 03 | 2011

HIGHLANDER LEWIS WILLIAMSON topped the afternoon timesheets at a soggy Silverstone by 0.806secs as the Scot continued his GP3 pre-season testing.

Having been narrowly pipped for the fastest time in the morning, Williamson made amends after lunch when he mastered the tricky conditions.

The Golspie 21-year-old (pictured in action today) powered his MW Arden car through the Nothamptonshire puddles to stop the clock at 2mins 06.902secs to comfortably top the timesheets ahead of England's Alexander Sims.

"Yeh, it was frustrating this morning," Williamson explained. "I was fastest right through the morning, essentially, before I was eased off the top in the last 15 minutes.

"Then, just as I was starting my final flying lap before lunch, the rain started and that really scuppered any hopes of beating Gabby (Chaves) who'd just nudged ahead of me.

"When we started the afternoon session, we all started with blank screens and, of course, the conditions had changed dramatically with the rain.

"I nailed a good three or four laps, and I know I could have gone even quicker when we all went out at the end of the day as the track conditions improved. I was about four-tenths up on my previous best time when I was blocked by one of the other guys; no one's fault, because there were a load of cars on-track, but it was disappointing.

"Still, to finish fastest driver in the tricky conditions was a great boost and it's encouraging for everyone in the MW Arden team."

Williamson and the rest of the GP3 racers will have their third and final days' testing at Silverstone tomorrow. The season kicks-off with the season-opener at Istanbul on May 7-8 as a support race to the Formula One Grand Prix.
