New Porsche 911 GT3 RS launch date 26 | 07 | 2022

PORSCHE WILL OFFICIALLY unveil the hardcore version of its 911 GT3, the RS, on August 17. And while it will benefit from a number of chassis and aero upgrades, it will keep the same engine as used in the 911 GT3. (Related: Porsche 911 GT3 gets 503bhp)

However, according to Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger, the new 911 GT3 RS has been developed with a  focus on track days, and “is even more optimised for track use than its predecessors”.

The official photographs revealed today show that compared to the 996-generation 911 GT3 it has a number of RS upgrades, most notably with a huge rear wing, but also with higher-placed and larger air intakes on the bonnet, plus wider wheelarches. (Related: Porsche adds Macan T to range)

Preuninger also hinted the the 911 GT3 RS will be powered by the same, or slightly uprated, 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat six as found in the ‘standard’ GT3. The unit currency delivers 503bhp and 347lb/ft torque.

“The spontaneously responsive, high-revving four-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine with approximately 500 PS has proven ideal for use at track days and club sport events,” he explained. “That's why we focused primarily on aerodynamics and chassis questions in the development of the new 911 GT3 RS.”

As in the GT3, and in classic 911 fashion, power will be sent solely to the rear wheels, most likely via a PDK seven-speed automatic gearbox. The new 911 GT3 RS will also be lighter, thanks to a stripped-out interior, lighter chassis and carbonfibre bodywork. (Related: Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo on sale)

No indication has yet been made regarding pricing, but given the previous 911 GT3 RS, released in 2018, was priced from around £141,000, expect the newcomer to start around the £150,000 mark.
