Toyota Aygo X gets new rugged look 05 | 11 | 2021

TOYOTA HAS BREATHED new life into its Aygo supermini by reintroducing it as a rugged-looking ultra-compact SUV. Not surprisingly, the Japanese carmaker describes it as “unique in the A-segment”. Sitting beneath the Yaris, the new Aygo X is the smallest model in Toyota’s line-up. Due to arrive in the first-half of 2022, prices are expected to start around £14,500. Cleverly, despite essentially reinventing the Aygo with its ‘X’ suffix, the newcomer retains many of the second-generation Aygo’s defining features, including the one-piece glass bootlid, vertical tail-light clusters, and most noticeably the retractable canvas roof.

At 3700mm, the Aygo X is longer than its predecessor, enjoys a wheelbase which is 90mm longer — resulting in more interior space all round, plus 60 litres of additional boot space — and is 50mm taller in terms of overall height. (Related: Pricing and spec for Toyota Yaris Cross)

The new model is also wider by 125mm, taking it to 1740mm. That has resulted in 20mm being added between the two front seats to improve shoulder room. It’ll also be easier to park, thanks to the front overhang being 72mm shorter than that of the Yaris. (Related: Toyota launches Yaris Cross Dynamic)

Clearly designed for urban and city centre driving, the Aygo X has a 9.4-metre turning circle, which is one of the tightest on the market. Toyota has also improved visibility by raising the seating by 55mm and making the A-pillars 10% steeper.

Wth its two-tone paintwork, the Aygo X confirms Toyota’s intention that the supermini should have a “youthful and fun character”. That’s further enhanced by a number of 4x4-inspired cues, including a raised ride height (11mm higher than that of the old Aygo), colour-contrasting wheel-arch surrounds and the prominent front skidplate. Toyota says the new car's colour palette is based on spices and fruits, which explains the Cardamom green, Chilli red, Ginger beige and Juniper blue choices. There’s also a Limited trim level at the start of Aygo X sales; this gets a Cardamom green finish with flecks of orange inside and out, plus bespoke alloys and upholstery.

Inside the rather utilitarian cabin across the range, there is a new 9.0in infotainment touchscreen and digital climate control panel, while the Aygo X also benefits from wireless smartphone charging and ambient lighting, both as standard. The higher-specced models gain an upgraded operating system with a range of ‘always-connected’ services, in addition to wireless smartphone mirroring and over-the-air software update capability. As for engines, only one is on offer … and it’s neither hybrid nor electric. The 71bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit delivers 69lb/ft of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual or CVT automatic gearbox. Toyota says it’ll return up to 60mpg, and emit just 107g/km of CO2.
