New entry-level Toyota GR Supra 2.0 07 | 01 | 2021

TOYOTA HAS BOOSTED its GR Supra range with the introduction of  a new entry-model. Powered by a 254bhp four-cylinder engine, it’s on-sale now across the UK with prices starting at £45,995. That’s a saving of £7000 over the 3.0-litre model. First deliveries are scheduled for the end of January. (Related: Toyota Yaris Hybrid — Review)

The arrival of the GR Supra 2.0 comes shortly after the removal of the GT86 — also a 2.0-litre four-cylinder-powered, rear-driven sports coupe — from the Toyota GB pricelist. Worth emphasising though that its successor, the GR86, is still scheduled to be sold in the UK.

The new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine fitted to the GR Supra 2.0 has been lifted straight from the BMW sports car engine line-up. All 254bhp and 295lb/ft are sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. (Related: Lexus LC 500 Carbiolet — Review)

Performance is impressive. Despite being 80bhp short of the 334bhp found in the 3.0-litre version, the 2.0-litre Supra covers 0-62mph in 5.2secs, just 0.8s slower than it’s more powerful stablemate. Both cars have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Toyota says the 2.0 will return 38.7mpg at the pumps, on the WLTP combined cycle, and emit 167g/km of CO2. Performance, balance and handling is further enhanced by the fact the new engine is more compact and 100kg lighter than the 3.0-litre unit. Toyota says this has allowed the engine to be mounted further towards the middle of the car for 50/50 weight distribution.

“To achieve agile steering and stable cornering, we worked very hard to reduce the new car’s weight, while aiming for a 50:50 weight balance,” GR Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, said. “This presented us with huge challenges, but we did not want to compromise on our targets.”

The GR Supra 2.0 is well equipped, with Alcantara-trimmed sports seats, an 8.8in infotainment display, 18in alloys, plus a range of safety functions including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and pedestrian detection all fitted as standard.

In addition, the first 45 units will be available in limited-edition Fuji Speedway trim and a unique painted livery inspired by the firm's Gazoo Racing team colours. This includes white metallic paint finish for the bodywork with contrasting 19in matt back alloys and red door mirror housings. In the cabin there are carbon fibre dashboard trim inserts and striking red leather and black Alcantara upholstery. Prices start at £47,395. (Related: New Toyota Yaris supermini starts at £19,910)

There’s also an optional Connect trim pack available. This includes sat-nav and heightened connectivity features. A Sport Pack includes an active differential, adaptive suspension and upgraded brakes.

Toyota Gazoo Racing was instrumental in honing the new sports car’s performance, working on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife and surrounding roads in Germany to achieve the most agile, stable and rewarding handling possible. Further extensive testing was carried out on roads around the world.
