Mazda revises CX-5 crossover 27 | 01 | 2021
MAZDA HAS UNVEILED an updated version of its best-selling model, the CX-5 SUV. The new model range — which now has an expanded engine line-up, plus an improved infotainment system — also includes a 2.5-litre four-cylinder version of Mazda’s SkyActiv-G petrol engine. Available to order now for click and collect, the range starts at £27,230, with the 2.5-litre priced from £36,860. (Related: Crossing world's largest lake in a CX-5)
Delivering 191bhp and 258Nm of torque, the 2.5-litre — which is only available on the range-topping GT Sport model — can cover 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds and carry on to a top speed of 121mph. (Related: Review — Mazda MX-30 Prototype)
As is the case with the entry-level 2.0-litre petrol engine, the new larger 2.5-litre features cylinder deactivation. This can shut down two of the engine’s four-cylinders when cruising. The benefit of this is, even with the larger engine, Mazda claims a combined fuel economy figure of 35.3mpg; that’s around 7% less than the smaller displacement unit. (Related: Roadtest — Mazda CX-5)
Interestingly, Mazda has also expanded the CX-5’s diesel line-up, with the range-topping 181bhp 2.2-litre model now available with front-wheel drive. The previous model could only have the engine fitted with four-wheel drive. Mazda has yet to confirm prices for the diesels. (Related: Roadtest — Mazda3 2.0 SkyActiv-G)
Across the 2021 range, the CX-5 — which accounts for 26% of Mazda’s new car sales in the UK and goes head-to-head with the likes of the VW Tiguan, Skoda Karoq and Honda CR-V — includes a new and improved infotainment system.
Out goes the previous model’s eight-inch screen to be replaced by a larger 10.25in unit. Mazda states the upgrade is both quicker and clearer. Included in the package are remote sat-nav programming, a vehicle tracker and a remote door locking function. (Related: Mazda3 named Scottish Car of the Year)
Mazda has also launched a new, special edition version of the CX-5: the Kuro Edition. Priced from just £29,630, it’s fitted with Mazda’s 163bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a six-speed manual as standard; a six-speed automatic gearbox is available as a £1600 option. As you would expect with any Mazda limited edition — just 750 units will be built — it’s packed to the gunwales with extra goodies. A choice of two metallic paint finishes — either Soul Red Crystal or Polymetal Grey — a power assisted tailgate, rear privacy glass, LED headlights, all-round parking sensors, plus black 19in alloys are all standard.
The perks continue inside the cabin, with the seats and door cards trimmed in a blend of black leatherette and suede, complete with contrasting red stitching; Mazda’s updated 10.25-inch infotainment system, heated front seats, a leather sports steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat are also included.
“Since the launch of the first-generation CX-5 in 2012, this SUV has been a crucial car in the UK market,” Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director, said. “It’s always been a hugely popular car that’s loved for its style, practicality and dynamic appeal, and the second-generation car only enhanced that further. Thanks to successive updates and refinements, it’s remained right at the top of the class.
“It’s great the 2021 CX-5 has arrived in dealerships. With improvements to the infotainment system, improved connectivity and an enlarged engine range it will offer customers even more choice. It’s also great that we have the Kuro in the line-up, as this limited-edition model is perfect for customers who want a stand-out SUV with unique detailing inside and out.”
