New 2020 Toyota Hilux 19 | 08 | 2020

TOYOTA HAS GIVEN its Hilux pick-up an update. The new model goes on-sale next month, with prices ranging from £34,925 to £40,475. In November, the range will be further supplemented with two cheaper, less specced models badged Active and Icon. Prices for the latter two will be confirmed closer to their launch. Externally the revised Hilux gets a new radiator grille, a new front bumper and a pair of revised LED headlamps. The two models on-sale in September — the Invincible and Invincible X — also gain new 18in alloys and redesigned LED rear light clusters.

Inside the cabin the analogue instrument cluster  has been updated and now includes a new central display. There’s also an improved eight-inch infotainment system with a pair of rotary controls. Sat-Nav is now also included, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. (Related: New Toyota Yaris supermini starts at £19,910)

In addition to the 18in alloys, the mid-range Hilux Invincible also gets front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, a de-icing function for the pick-up truck’s windscreen wipers, plus utomatic air conditioning and keyless entry.

The range-topping Invincible X, which starts at £38,975, adds a dedicated styling package which includes flared wheel arches, a new front bumper, a unique radiator grille, a restyled tailgate and — hold your breath — different door handles.

Inside the cabin of the X, there’s perforated leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an ambient lighting system and some new black metallic and chrome trim.  Toyota has also added a premium JBL stereo system, comprising a 224mm subwoofer and an 800W eight-channel amplifier. Arriving in November, the entry-level Active spec now gains a host of extra safety equipment, including  lane departure warning, a traffic sign recognition system and adaptive cruise control.

Not surprisingly, the updated hill is available with a host of options. These include a locking tailgate, roller bed covers, hard bed covers, and a 12-volt power supply mounted in the load bed. Buyers will also be able to choose from nine body colours, including a new Titan Bronze finish which is exclusive to the range-topping Invincible X model.

Changes under the bonnet and to the drivetrain

The updates also see the edition of a new turbocharged 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which sits above the Hilux’s existing 148bhp 2.4-litre powertrain. Developing 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, Toyota says it will cover 0-62mph in 10secs, which is 3.2s quicker than the less powerful engine.

Toyota has yet to finalise the fuel economy and emissions figures for the new engine, but the company expects them to be around 36mpg and 200g/km of CO2 respectively.

All UK versions of the Hilux come with four-wheel-drive as standard, and buyers have their choice of either a six-speed manual or, for an extra £1500 six-speed automatic gearbox.

The gearbox is linked to a new automatic limited-slip differential. Toyota says this will improve the offroad performance of the Hilux. Operating when the pick-up is in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive, the diff automatically sends power to the wheel with the most traction.

Toyota has also fitted a few chassis upgrades to the Hilux to further complement the new engine, all aimed at providing a smoother ride. The updates include new shock absorbers, fresh bushings and improved leaf springs for the rear axle. And to ensure the driver has better control when crawling over rutted surfaces, Toyota has  lowered both engines’ idle speeds from 850 to 680rpm.
