Mitchell targets GT3 Barcelona win 26 | 09 | 2019
SCOTS ENDURANCE RACER Sandy Mitchell heads to the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona this weekend determined to finish his Blancpain GT season with another win. (Related: Mitchell seals first wins in the USA)
The 19-year-old from Forfar will fire up his 190mph Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 for the grand finale of Europe’s premier sportscar series, the Blancpain GT Endurance Championship.
The three-hour race takes place on the circuit which also hosts the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, and Mitchell will arrive in Barcelona having stormed to Silver Cup victory in the last round, the Spa 24Hrs. (Related: Mitchell wins Spa 24-Hours Silver Cup)
“We showed last time out in Belgium that we have a car capable of beating the rest of the field,” stated Mitchell, personally backed by Black Bull Scotch Whisky, and who will again share his Barwell Motorsport-prepared Lamborghini with English team-mates James Pull and Jordan Witt.
“Everything came together perfectly at Spa, and the team and all three drivers really put a stint in to win what is the biggest race on the Blancpain calendar. It would be terrific if we could finish the season with another victory.”
And Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme, is determined to go one step better than last season. (Related: Mitchell bags back-to-back US podiums)
“In my first year racing in Blancpain last season, I finished third overall in the Silver Cup,” Mitchell explained. “This weekend we head to Spain knowing that if results go our way, we can finish second in the championship, which would be a terrific achievement, especially after the difficult start we had to the season.
“I know James and Jordan, plus all the crew at Barwell are as determined as I am to deliver the perfect sign-off to the season. We go to Spain concentrating solely on what we can control. We have to focus on our performance and our race, and then see what effect that has had on the battle for second place in the championship.
“But first, we need to try and win the race and then hope other results work in our favour. Believe me, we’ll be doing everything we can to win the three-hour finale, and end the season on the top step of the podium again.”
