NISSAN HAS LIFTED the wraps from its second-generation Juke, the car which created the compact crossover sector with the launch of its predecessor almost nine years ago. Orders can be placed at Nissan dealers from today, with prices starting at £17,395 for the entry-level Visia. The more popular N-Connecta and Tekna cars cost from £20,995 and £22,495 respectively. Designed in Britain and set to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, and with almost one million of the first-gem sold in Europe, the new Juke is clearly linked to the first-generation car through its shape and the retention of some of the original’s most recognisable styling traits. But the newcomer is larger than the car it replaces.
Boasting 19in alloys and a coupé style ‘floating roof’ design, the 2020 Juke is equipped with full LED technology as standard. It also retains its iconic circular headlamps but with a new Y-shaped signature which complements Nissan’s V-Motion grille. An exclusive red body shade, Fuji Sunset, now completes the line-up of 11 colours.
Nissan says the new Juke is roomier for both passengers and their belongings, with rear-seat knee room increased by 5.8cm, rear head room by 1.1cm and a boot capacity of 422 litres; that equates to 20% more storage room, or an extra 68-litres. A reimagined interior creates an improved driver position, increased rear roominess and more user-friendly controls and storage. There’s also new soft-touch materials on the dashboard, door trim and foot-wells offer a premium feel, complemented by standard monoform sporty seats and optional Alcantara or leather upholstery. The latest Juke will also be available with the all-new Tekna+ grade package which Nissan says ensures customers can heavily personalise there car. Multiple colour combinations for body, roof and interior upholstery are available – bringing out the urban, premium and sporty character of the Juke. Exterior personalisation is also offered as standard on Tekna+, with customisable bumpers, side sills and 19in alloy wheels.
The new Juke has grown. It’s 35mm wider and 75mm longer nose to tail than before, but importantly, the wheelbase has grown by 105mm. Dimensions are now 210 mm length; 1595mm height; and a width of 1800mm for better roominess. Despite that, it’s actually 23kg lighter. Thanks to high strength steel, the new model features a more rigid platform that offers better stability, performance and cornering capabilities, and new levels of confidence and control. Juke is powered by an efficient 1.0-litre three-cylinder DIG-T turbocharged petrol engine with 115bhp, lifted from the Micra, and available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an all-new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The latter replaces the CVT transmission previously offered.
Performance? The manual covers 0-62mph in 10.3secs, and will top out around 120mph. And though Nissan has yet to confirm CO2 emission and fuel economy figures, it’s fair to expect 113-118g/km and around 45mpg under WLTP rules. The auto will take 11.1secs to cover 0-62mph, and will have a max of 112mph.
The new Juke also benefits from enhanced technology features, with Nissan’s infotainment and driver assistance technology. Includes is Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology, making this the most connected Nissan ever.
Nissan’s advanced ProPilot technology, which offers electronically assisted steering, acceleration and braking, will be available on the Juke for the first time. Designed for use in single-lane traffic, Nissan says ProPilot makes long commutes and heavy traffic easier.
In addition, Juke offers a full package of safety technologies, including Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Lane Intervention, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Blind Spot Intervention as a Nissan premiere that is unique to the segment. Blind Spot Intervention warns the driver when a car gets into its blind spot and brings the Nissan back in the lane.
With the new NissanConnect infotainment system, drivers and passengers can use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to mirror their favourite smartphone apps on the 8-inch touch screen display. Drivers can also access TomTom Maps & Live Traffic or activate their on-board Wi-Fi Hotspot to allow passengers connecting their laptops or tablets.
The NissanConnect Services app offers customers control over multiple aspects of their car. Owners can now check the door-lock status of their vehicle and lock or unlock their Nissan directly from their smartphone. For increased safety, drivers can also check their tyre pressure and oil level before departing on a trip.
