Ford reveals lightweight GT 05 | 11 | 2018
FORD HAS PRODUCED a special edition of its mid-engined supercar; the new GT Carbon Series makes weight saving its primary focus. (Related: Limited Ford GT gets iconic Gulf livery)
The biggest weight-saving comes in the form of the car’s 10-spoke carbon fibre wheels. Featuring a gloss finish, they’re held in place by five lightweight titanium bolts. Ford has also used the same material for the new exhaust system.
Overall Ford has managed to shave 18kg off the weight of the ‘standard’ GT, meaning the Carbon Series tips the scales at 1367kg dry weight. (Related: Ford GT celebrates '67 Le Mans win)
Of course, you would expect Ford to also introduce some cosmetic tweaks to ensure the new model stands apart from the ‘standard’ GT. The Carbon Series gets double stripes which are created by exposing the body’s bare carbon below the paint. There’s also a contrasting centre pin stripe, which is available in silver, orange, red or blue. It’s part of an accent package which also colours the door mirror caps and brake calipers.
The front splitter, rear diffuser and A-pillar are also exposed carbon, while inside the cabin the bare carbon theme continues; centre console, air vents and door sills are all matte finish carbon.
But Ford has also shaved some weight off the cabin too by ditching the cupholders and driver’s side storage bin. Sensibly, Ford has retained the ‘standard’ car’s SYNC 3 infotainment system and air conditioning system.
Elsewhere in the cabin, there’s unique badging on the instrument panel, gearshift paddles in an anodised silver finish, and silver stitching on both the seats and the steering wheel.
Approved customer applicants can order the Ford GT Carbon Series now. Ford also will open the final owner application process for select global markets on November 8. Prospective owners can submit their applications at www.FordGT.com for 30 days.
“This is an example of how we listen to our customers”, Lance Mosley, marketing manager, Ford Performance, said. “While the Ford GT Competition model appeals to hardcore racing enthusiasts, we found more customers asking for more exposed carbon fibre with the air conditioning and radio still intact. So we developed the Carbon Series to satisfy that need, while providing a distinct look.”
