Renault reveals price for Megane RS  03 | 05 | 2018

RENAULT’S ALL-NEW Megane RS — set to go head-to-head with the Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Hyundai i30 N — is available to order now from Scottish dealerships. Prices start from £27,495, with first deliveries scheduled for July. (Related: Renault unveils limited edition Clio R.S.18)

Based on the standard five-door hatchback, the RS’s body has been extended by 60mm at the front and 45mm at the rear, which also houses a new rear diffuser. Styling cues include a Formula One-style front blade finished in gunmetal grey, and chequered flag LED fog lamps, which have been incorporated into the rear bumper design.

At the front, there are air vents behind the wheelarches. These have been designed to boost airflow around the front of the car at high speed. (Related: Lucky Scot wins Renault Clio)

While 19-inch alloys are available as a £950 option, 18in alloys are standard. There’s also a new paint colour called Tonic Orange.

The options list also includes Brembo brakes (£900), the Cup chassis pack (£1500) — which adds a limited slip differential, stiffened suspension and red brake callipers — Alcantara steering wheel (£250), Alcantara interior trim (£1200), and a BOSE sound system (£800).

And if you’re quick to get your order for the Megane RS in before the end of the month, Renault will give you the Cup chassis upgrade free of charge.

Renault has ditched the 2.0-litre turbo four in the previous Megane RS and replaced it with a 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder. Billed as the “most powerful 1.8-litre engine on the UK market”, it pumps out 276bhp.

The same engine is found in the Alpine A110 Coupe, but has been further tweaked for the RS. Renault said in the Megane it’s capable of 0-62mph in 5.8secs, and a top speed of 158mph.  The French car maker says it’ll all return 34mpg — most likely high 20s in real life — and emit 155g/km of C02.

The range will be further supplemented next year with the arrival of a more focused Trophy version of the Megane RS. While it will retain the same 1.8-litre turbo engine, power will increase to 295bhp, with torque rising to 400Nm. Trophy models will also get a firmer Cup chassis and 19-inch alloys.

Buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch auto. The latter, which is likely to command a four-figure price premium over the manual, gets launch control as well as a multi-change-down function.

There’s also a choice of five driving modes (Comfort, Normal, Sport, Race and Perso) on the new Megane RS. These are accessed via the Megane’s digital and display tailor the car’s steering, throttle and transmission setup accordingly. Cleverly, Renault has installed an RS Drive button which provides a shortcut to Sport and Race modes.

And Renault is claiming a first in the hot hatch segment by introducing the four-wheel steering system called 4CONTROL into the Megane RS. The system, which will be fitted to every model as standard, has been designed to boost agility at low speed and stability at high-speed.
