Seat confirms large SUV 24 | 03 | 2017

SEAT HAS CONFIRMED it will expand its range with a new flagship SUV. The new model — featuring 5- and 7-seater versions — will reach Scottish dealerships in 2018, and is set to go head-to-head with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe.

The car was confirmed by Seat boss Luca de Meo, speaking at the brand's annual press conference, where the official, rather hazy, teaser images were also released. No name has been confirmed for the new car, but Meo admitted “there are plenty of Spanish cities that are suitable to be used for a name”.

Designed and developed in Barcelona and made in the Wolfsburg factory, the new model will be based on the Skoda Kodiaq, another part of the VW Group. But the new Seat, which will attack a market segment above the new Ateca five-seater, will will have its own sheet-metal and unique interior.

Based on the scalable MQB platform, the Seat SUV will be around 4700mm long, which is relatively compact for a 5+2 seater.

Power will come from a range of current VW Group engines, and though Seat has still to confirm power plants, we can expect  a 148bhp 1.4TSi petrol, 148bhp 2.0TDi, 178bhp 2.0 petrol and high-output 178bhp 2.0TDi. Buyers will have the choice of two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, six-speed manual and a DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

Prices won’t be confirmed until much nearer launch, but it’s expected the entry- price of the new model will break through the £30,000 barrier.
