ALFA ROMEO HAS confirmed its first mainstream SUV, the Stelvio, will start at £33,990 in entry-level trim with the 180bhp 2.2-litre diesel when it goes on-sale at Scottish dealerships in September. That makes it £740 less than the river; Jaguar F-Pace. The range tops-out with the 2.0-litre 280bhp Milano Edizione at £45,390. (Related: Stelvio gets five-star treatment)

at launch there will be two engines: a 2.2-litre diesel with either 178bhp or 207bhp — the latter available exclusively in all-wheel drive — or an all-wheel drive petrol with 197bhp or 276bhp. The entry-level engine is the rear-wheel drive 178bhp diesel.

The new Stelvio is one of the smaller premium small SUVs on the market. Measuring 4686mm long, 1677mm tall (including antenna), and 1903mm wide (2163mm incl the mirrors), it’s marginally shorter than the Porsche Macan which is 4699mm long. The class-leading Porsche is also squatter, measuring 1624mm tall and 1923mm wide.

The Stelvio's spec line-up has four specific trim levels: standard 'Stelvio', 'Super', 'Speciale' and 'Milano Edizione'.

    Alfa Romeo Stelvio Milano Edizione

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio launch edition, Milano Edizione, offers buyers sporty leather seats, a 10-speaker Sound Theatre, 20in V-Spoke alloy wheels, keyless entry and an Athermic windscreen. Privacy glass with black gloss window surround, electrically adjustable and heated front seats and a rear-view camera with dynamic grid lines enhance the standard specification.

After the initial launch, the range will be further supplemented by the range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Powered by an all-aluminium, bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine, shared with the Giulia Quadrifoglio and it will produce 503bhp and 443lb/ft torque.

It will only be available with four-wheel drive. Alfa Q4 system sends 100% of the torque rearwards in normal conditions, but can divide between the front and rear up to 50/50. It’s also coupled with torque vectoring for the first time. The use of two clutches in the rear differential allow torque vectoring between the rear wheels.
